Placode

Placodes, which form during embryonic development, are the beginnings of cells. From a structural point of view, they correspond to a thickening of the epithelial layer.

In man, the formation of sensory placodes occurs during the fifth week of embryonic development.

In some fish, the lateral line, an organ involved in mechanoreception and electroreception, comes from placodes.
