Megafauna

Megafauna is a term used to describe all large animals. Generally, the lower limit for this term is a weight of 45 kilogrammes. Megafauna are usually vertebrates.

Currently, there are about one thousand species of megafauna.

The interest in using this concept is to highlight a sharp reduction in the number of these species during the last few dozen thousand years. One reason often stated is the expansion of the human species.
