Hyoid

In humans, the hyoid is a bone located in the anterior part of the neck, above the larynx and under the base of the tongue.

In birds, the hyoid is very developed and in woodpeckers it particularly protects the skull from the repeated shocks of the bird's beak pecking against a tree.

In felines it is the origin of purring.
