Dehnel phenomenon

The Dehnel phenomenon is the contraction of the cranium in shrews in winter and the return to normal size in spring.

This phenomenon was demonstrated in 1949 by the Polish zoologist August Dehnel (1903 - 1962).

Other organs, such as the liver or kidneys, are also concerned. This adaptation makes it possible to reduce food needs in winter.
