Coleoptera

In Greek, "koleos" means 'sheath' and "pteron" means 'wing'.

The order of coleoptera includes over 350,000 species of insects, which undergo complete metamorphosis, with mouthparts that can crush food and anterior wings that are more or less fused (elytra, from the Greek "elutron" = sheath) and jointed when at rest, thus protecting the membranous posterior wings; they are not used for flight.
