Regional metamorphism

Regional metamorphism, which is also called general metamorphism, is caused by rises in temperature and pressure. It affects considerable amounts of rock. There is: (1) static regional metamorphism or burial affecting sedimentary series; (2) dynamothermal regional metamorphism related to great phases of orogenesis and leading to the formation of schists, micaschists and gneiss (e.g. hercynian metamorphism, alpine metamorphism ).
