Caldera

Caldera is a word of Portuguese origin meaning cauldron, indicating a giant crater several km to several tens of km in diameter with a circular or elliptical contour. These craters are produced by the collapse of the central part of volcanoes, the underlying magma chamber having been partially emptied through eruptions.
