Space elevator

The space elevator is a more or less achievable project of an elevator between Earth and space.

Inspired by the success of the Ansari X prize awarded to the first private company to send a man into orbit -- twice -- NASA has launched its first challenge of the century: two $50,000 prizes will be awarded to whoever develops the most promising space elevator technology.
