Magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection is the mechanism in which the energy stored in a magnetic field is suddenly converted into other forms of energy. This mechanism is active in nearly all magnetised plasma, and therefore virtually in the whole universe. Magnetic reconnection is at the origin of some of the most violent phenomena in our solar system, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejection.
