GLONASS

GLONASS is the Russian satellite geopositioning system. Created during the cold war, the GLONASS programme's first satellites were placed in orbit in October 1982.

There are now between 7 and 10 operational satellites although there were initially to be 24.

The scheduled and planned introduction of GALILEO is likely to lead to the progressive abandon of GLONASS by 2015.
