Challenger

Initially intended for experimental tests, Challenger was the third American space shuttle built by NASA and the second to be put into orbit. It disintegrated on takeoff on 28 January 1986 leading to the death of the seven crew members, including one civilian, a young schoolteacher chosen to be the first citizen in space.
