Hydroponics

Hydroponics is a soil free farming technique that uses revitalised nutritive solutions and an inert substrate (mineral or plant) to replace the support and nutriments from the soil.

The control of the solution used to irrigate hydroponic crops ensures optimal water and nutritive substance intakes under ideal conditions (oxygen, pH, etc.).

Advantage of hydroponics

The interest of hydroponics is therefore the complete control of plant growing conditions, which is very useful in plant research as well as for production, since meteorological uncertainties and pedological variables do not come into play.

Furthermore, this technique gives high yields, even in environments that are not favourable to plant growth.

Use of hydroponics

Hydroponics is therefore much used in horticulture and market gardening, as well as in the production of exotic plants.

Due to these advantages, hydroponics is also part of research activities in the conquest of space, in researching methods for supplying food and oxygen in space or on other planets.
