Deforestation

Deforestation makes it possible to use forests covered land for non-forestry purposes. This term is used when forest cover is reduced to a density lower than 10% per hectare.

Often, deforestation is given as one of the major factors contributing to the greenhouse effect, because the combustion or decomposition of wood releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
