Chemical oxygen demand

Chemical oxygen demand, or COD, is one of the parameters of water quality. It represents the quantity of oxygen needed to oxidise all of the organic matter contained in water.

This value is obtained by making water samples react with a powerful oxidant (potassium bichromate) and is expressed in milligrams of oxygen per litre of water.
