Opposition

Opposition is a phenomenon in which the celestial geocentric longitudes (right ascensions) of a planet and of the Sun differ by 180°.

For example, suppose the Sun, the Earth and the planet are aligned in this order. From Earth, the planet will lie opposite to the Sun. Conditions are most favourable for observations around the date of the opposition.
