M 96

Some regions of the sky offer an unusual concentration of galaxies, much to the delight of astronomers. This is the case of the Leo 1 group of galaxies in the constellation of Leo. The galaxies in this group are speeding away from us at speeds of between 500 and 1000 km/sec. M96 is a spiral galaxy, the brightest of the group with a visual magnitude of 9.2. In 1781 this galaxy was catalogued by Charles Messier.
