The Dumbbell nebula

This was the first nebula discovered by MESSIER in 1764.

It also looks like an apple core; what can be seen is the gaseous envelope ejected by a dying star in the centre of the nebula.

M27 is a remarkable object through a pair of binoculars because of its apparent size (half a full Moon) and its brightness (magnitude 7.4).
