# Second order parametric interactions

From a so-called pump wave of frequency $omega_p$, optical parametric interactions produce two waves of lower frequency: the signal at $omega_s$ and the complementary at $omega_c$ (sometimes called idler). The conservation of energy requires that $omega_p = omega_s+omega_c$. To obtain this a non-linear medium is required, which is often a non-linear crystal, such as lithium niobate.
