Refractive index

In an isotropic medium the refractive index at a point is defined by n=c0/c, where c0 is the speed of light in a vacuum and c the speed of light in the medium at that point.

In electromagnetism, the refractive index is defined from the dielectric constant and can take complex values in absorbing media.
