Meson

A meson is a hadron composed of a quark and an anti-quark. The word meson from the Greek meaning "medium". In the 1950s the three categories of known particles were leptons; mesons and baryons corresponding to the Greek words for "light", "medium" and "heavy". Now a lepton that is heavier than some baryons is known but the name has stuck.
