Extinction

In optical microscopy extinction is the darkening of the polarisation colours of crystals when they make a certain angle with the direction of the polarisation planes of the polarisers. During one complete rotation of the microscope plate 4 intensity maxima and 4 extinction positions at 45° from the maxima can be observed.
