Exciton

An exciton is a pseudo-particle composed by matching an electron and a hole, i.e. a region where an electron is missing and that behaves like a positively charged particle.

The exciton appears in a crystalline solid after absorption of a photon. The phenomenon is especially seen in semiconductors.
