Atomic number

The atomic number is the number of protons in a nucleus and it characterises a chemical element. For a given atomic number the number of neutrons defines the different isotopes of this element. The variation in the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, for example during a nuclear reaction, changes the element in question.
