Baseline

In oceanography and maritime law, the baseline is the limit that defines the territorial waters of a country, over which it has all rights. Other maritime zones are established from this baseline.

The baseline is defined by the low-water mark or, when the coast is very jagged, by straight lines that are joined together at specific points located on the low water mark (nearby islands, rocks, etc.). Sometimes these straight baselines close bays.
