Snoring

Snoring or rhonchopathy is the noise produced unconsciously by someone who is sleeping. Air entering during inspiration makes the soft tissues of the palate and uvula vibrate, causing the characteristic and often irritating noise to people around them.

Snoring is not considered to be a disease as it is harmless and does not cause any complications except when it causes sleep apnoea.

Causes of snoring

Snoring is promoted by specific anatomical features such as being overweight which narrows the respiratory tract, large tonsils or tissue relaxation (age, alcohol, etc.). Snoring can even be inherited.

Snoring can disturb the sleep of both the person concerned and people around them. © Happy Batatinha, Flickr, CC by 2.0 Snoring can disturb the sleep of both the person concerned and people around them. © Happy Batatinha, Flickr, CC by 2.0
