Sedimentation

Sedimentation is the separation of blood into its liquid (plasma) and solid (cells) components. The sediment – the solid part – settles at the bottom of the tube beneath the liquid parts. The sedimentation rate is a diagnostic index which is useful as it varies according to the amount of globules suspended in blood. Both a rise or fall in the number of blood cells may be a sign of disease.
