Polyposis

Recto-colonic polyposis, or oedematous polyposisis is an inherited disease involving an accumulation of polyps in the colon (which usually develop at the age of 7 to 36 years old). Although it is harmless in itself, it predisposes to colonic cancer which may develop at any time over an age band of 34 to 43 years old.

A limited form is also seen (with less than 30 polyps), in which case the malignant degeneration occurs later.

It can only be treated surgically.
