Myelin

Myelin is a compact spiral plasma membrane in the glial cell (oligodendrocyte, the Schwann cell), which is rich in lipids (70%), and surrounds some axons forming a sheath around them (the myelin sheath). This sheath insulates axons from each other and increases the speed with which nerve messages spread along the nerve fibres.
