The Mediterranean or Cretian diet is known for its health benefits. Its name comes from the fact that it is traditionally the diet of people living in Mediterranean countries, particularly Crete.
The diet is based on low intake of saturated fats. Almost no red meat is eaten and it is replaced by fish, dairy products (yoghurt and cheese), a great deal of fruit and fresh or dried vegetables, seasoned with or cooked in olive oil.
