In situ

The term in situ describes a mass of malignant cells that does not cross the basement membrane on which it lies and which separates it from the surrounding tissues. However, a carcinoma in situ, is at high risk of becoming invasive, i.e. of invading neighbouring tissues. Example: in situ carcinoma of the breast.
