Gout

The term gout is used in medicine.

Medicine

Gout is a disease related to uric acid metabolism resulting from an excess of uric acid in the blood. It usually involves inflammatory arthritis of the great toe. In this disorder uric acid production is increased or its removal is reduced. The pain in attacks of gout is due to deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints. These crystals can also invade the skin and kidneys.

Gout is a mostly male condition (à 90 %) and is found in adulthood and it may also affect women.
