Fibula

The fibula (peroneal bone) is a leg bone.

Site of the fibula

The fibula lies between the knee and the ankle parallel and posterior to the tibia.

Structure of the fibula

The fibula is a long bone with two epiphyses and a thin diaphysis which is triangular in section. The two epiphyses articulate with the tibia and the distal epiphysis also articulates with the talus, an ankle bone. The fibula also forms the external malleolus, the bony outgrowth at the ankle.

Function of the fibula

The fibula stabilises the ankle joint.
