Coprostanol

Coprostanol is a lipid belonging to the sterol family and is found in faecal matter. It results from degradation of cholesterol by bacteria in the intestinal flora (reduction, in the chemical meaning of the word).

The compound has been proposed as a marker of human pollution in natural environments.
