Colostomy

A colostomy is an opening of the colon onto the wall of the abdomen to allow faeces to pass externally when a part of the intestine suffering from a tumour has been removed. The term intestinal shunt is also used. A colostomy may be temporary or irreversible and requires a bag to be worn to collect the faeces.
