Channelrhodopsin

Channelrhodopsin is a protein originating from the unicellular green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The protein is an ion channel which only allows ions to pass through the membranes but only in the presence of light.

Because of its photosensitive properties, researchers have used the protein as a tool in optogenetics.
