Cardia

The cardia of the stomach is the opening forming the junction between the oesophagus and the stomach.

Function of the cardia

The cardia forms a fold which acts as a functional sphincter, preventing foods rising back from the stomach into the oesophagus. Malfunction of the cardia occasionally causes gastro-oesophageal reflux problems.
