Cadherin

Cadherin is a glycoprotein (a protein bound to a sugar) which provides adherence between cells. There are around thirty known forms of glycoproteins. They are transmembrane (and therefore in contact with both the intra- and extra-cellular environment) and their activity is calcium-dependent.

In particular, cadherins play an important role in development and are involved in pathological processes.
