Barium

Barium is a labelling substance used in conjunction with x rays for diagnostic tests. A special preparation containing a barium compound is drunk (like a "milkshake") or administered as an enema. A radiograph of the patient's gastro-intestinal tract taken a few minutes later reveals very high contrast because of the substance. This helps to diagnose gastro-intestinal disorders.
