Anastomosis

A surgical procedure involving suturing ("sewing") the ends of two organs (such as two nerves or two veins) in order for blood to flow. The term gastrointestinal anastamosis is also used if a surgeon opens the bowel through the abdominal wall, for example because of a tumour (see colostomy, ileostomy).
