AFSSA
The French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA) was created on 1st April 1999 and is a French public institution.
It is responsible for helping to guarantee the safety of food, from production of raw materials to distribution to the final consumer. In particular, as part of this, it needs to express opinions about the production, processing, storage, and distribution processes and conditions for foodstuffs.
As part of the French General Public Policy Revision (RGPP), between now and 2010, Afssa will merge with Afsset (the French environmental and health and safety at work agency).
