Electric field

An electric field is a vector quantity E, responsible for electrical forces (Coulomb force). Unit: volt par metre (V.m-1).

The electric field is a notion that goes back to the work of Coulomb (1785); it is the force field associated with a unit electric charge. It is derived from the electric potential.

The electric field is coupled with the magnetic field by the equations of Maxwell and Lorentz (electromagnetic field).
