LAN

Local Area Network: a communication system for connecting several hundred computers and peripherals within a radius of a few kilometres. Local networks first appeared in the 1970s and took off in the 1980s with the development of microcomputers and the arrival of the Ethernet communications standard. The wide area network (WAN), on the other hand, can connect thousands of computers scattered over hundreds or even thousands of kilometres.
