GIF

GIF (graphic interchange file) is one of the two most commonly used image formats on the internet. The other is JPEG. It was invented by CompuServe. GIF files are highly compressed using the LWZ ( Lempel-Ziv-Welch) method, yet are of very acceptable quality. The maximum number of colours in a GIF format image is 256, and transparency is also possible.
