Unicode

Unicode is an encoding system created in 1998. It specifies a unique number for each character whatever the platform, software or language used. While 8-bit ASCII could accommodate at most 256 characters, Unicode has a 16-bit code for each character and can therefore cover over 65,000 unique characters and handle every writing system in the world.
