SHA-1

SHA-1 is a 1994 version of the SHA (Secure Hash Algorithm), developed by the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) (Federal Information Processing Standard FIPS 180-1); used with the DSS (Digital Signature Standard), it provides a 160 bit hash value (message digest) similar to MD4, and is very popular and widely used.
