Audio compression

In audio compression, the loudest sounds are attenuated and the softest are amplified, keeping the sound within audible limits and according to a defined level of compression. Put simply, the volume range in a song is limited. The difference in the maximum and minimum levels is called the dynamic range. Compression is used in vinyl recording, because the dynamic range of the support is lower than that of the music before compression.
