DES: Data encryption standard. Encryption in 64-bit blocks, a symmetric algorithm also called DEA (Data Encryption Algorithm) by ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and DEA-1 by ISO (International Standards Organisation). The FIP 46 (Federal Information Processing) standard was adopted in 1976 and has been widely used for over thirty years.
