Tetragonal system

The tetragonal system is a crystal system in which the unit cell of the lattice is a right prism on a square base (a=b). The characteristic symmetry element is a 4-fold axis: A4. There are 7 crystal classes in this system.

The tetragonal system is one of the seven lattice systems, along with:

• the triclinic system;
• the monoclinic system;
• the orthorhombic system;
• the hexagonal system;
• the rhombohedral system;
• the cubic system.
