Fault

A fault is a discontinuity or fracture of the Earth's crust, evidence of the relative movement of the two blocks separated by the fault. The displacement between the two blocks is called the net slip. Faults are classified according to the type of net slip; thus, a strike slip is characterised by a mainly horizontal shift along the plane of the fault.
