Crust

The crust is the rigid superficial part of the globe which varies in thickness. The continental crust is essentially granite, with an average thickness of 35 km, and 10 km thick for the oceanic crust. The essentially basaltic oceanic crust is denser (heavy minerals: olivine, pyroxene) and 10 km thick, and is generated from the oceanic or mid-oceanic ridges.
